A Look Back on 2016

Don't look now, but it's 2017 already! 2016 was certainly a crazy year in a lot of ways. There's been some good and not so good things that happened this past year. Possibly the hardest thing to happen to us AIO fans was the loss Alan Young and Janet Waldo, two wonderful people who contributed so much to the show. There were a lot of celebrities that passed away in 2016, but these ones were the ones that really hit me.

There's a lot of uncertainty in this life, but we have hope! Jeremiah 29:11 says For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. (KJV)

As we say goodbye to 2016, we wanted to look back on the fun things that we did last year as a year end celebration. Plus, it's also a chance for those of you that may have missed out on some events to go back and check them out!

2016 was our 8th year on the Internet. To celebrate that, we did something we called A Summer of Celebration. We held 2 different contests for people to win some Odyssey products; one contest was a drawing and one was a site wide scavenger hunt. Be on the lookout for an even bigger contest to start in the early part of this year!

We made a big change to our website for our 8th birthday. First, we got a new logo (created by our friend, Michael Wilmot) and gave the blog a makeover make the blog posts catch your eye better and find them easier.

We did something really special during the summer. We did a Teespring campaign and sold t-shirts with the famous quote from Arthur Dent. "Operation Think Tank will enslave the human race. Would you like a muffin?" People really enjoyed them, including the writer of that famous quote, Marshal Younger! He was kind enough to share these pictures of him with it seen here.

We have plans for a new design for a t-shirt this year so stay tuned!

We started a new video series on our YouTube channel called Let's Play Odyssey. Austin filmed his playing of the very first Adventures in Odyssey computer game, 3-D CD-ROM, to be precise. The first part of the game was prerecorded, but we livestreamed the second part of the game so people could see it being played in real time. We plan on doing the third part of the game sometime soon in 2017.

We love doing audio productions. This past year, we did another one: another Did You Know? segment, this time for the USA's Flag Day. We had a couple of actors from the Jonathan Park radio drama series help us on it. You can hear that and past AIO Blog productions on our SoundCloud page.

Remember our version of the 12 Days of Christmas? After several years, we finally made a lyrics video for our classic song parody, 12 Days of Odyssey. You can watch and sing along with it on our YouTube channel.

We did two interviews in 2016. Our latest one was with Phil Lollar. We asked him about Iliad House, AIO, and future projects. But, our biggest interview was back in the summer when we interviewed the 3 main guys behind Jungle Jam: Nathan Carlson, Jeff Parker, and Phil Lollar! They told how they met on AIO, shared funny stories of creating Jungle Jam, and even performed in an ad libbed a scene with their character voices!

Four desktop wallpapers were created and uploaded, including ones of Album 59 & 60, a commemorative Odyssey, USA one for Independence Day, and, our current favorite, Christmas Views from Whit's Window. The post with that last one marked our 600th blog post!

We're excited for what's in store for us in 2017, especially since this year is Adventures in Odyssey's 30th year on the air! Focus on the Family is going to be doing lots of cool stuff  for its anniversary. We'll be sure to let you know all about it in the months to come.

Annum Novum, everyone!

  1. This year was a great year!

  2. Oh, Austin, hi! I love what I'm hearing in Legacy. Although I wish they didn't change the name of the OAC to the Adventures in Odyssey Club because more people would associate it with AIO.
Is album 63 coming out this year in the OAC? Can't wait for this year!
    Happy New Year!

  3. I wonder what the big contest will be.

  4. Cannot believe you have actual photos from THE Marshal Younger!
